How To Make Homemade Croutons

The word 'crouton' derives from the French word 'croute' which means crust in English . croutons is a small cube piece of fried or toasted bread . In other word, croutons are chunk of bread which are re-baked in the oven or frying in the pan . The basic ingredients are Slice of bread, melted butter | olive oil, seasoning are garlic powder, fresh or dried parsley .    

Procedures of making croutons
  • Take a slice of white bread which are 1-2 days old because old bread can be easily cut without crumble and you get a good dice cut  and trim the crust .
  • cut the bread into lengthwise and then dice them. The size of the cubed bread depend on you.
  • Put in a bowl and seasoned with garlic powder, fresh chop or dried parsley and sprinkle melted butter or olive oil and then mix with the light hand .
  • Place the wax paper on the tray and spread the bread just like in the below image and baked it at the temperature between 375 c for 1o-15 mins. 

  • Beside it, you can also toast on the pan or deep fry . you need a more oil for deep frying . 

Chef notes
  • you can use any kind of bread for making croutons, but sourdough bread are good just like French bread .
  • croutons should be  crispy and golden or slightly golden in color .   .
  • for home use you can not need to be cut the crust .
Storing
  • croutons should be store in a zip plastic bag with all the air removed from inside it prior to sealing because air or humidity will cause the croutons to get stale . you can also store it in plastic box with tight cap . Always store at room temperature . Don't store in the moist place as croutons will remove their crispy texture .
uses of croutons
  • It is used both as a accompaniment and garnish to soup such as tomato soup and salad such as Caesar salad to add texture and flavor in the salad. 
  • It is used as an accompaniment to stew and also eaten as a snack food. 
  • It can be also used to make bread crumbs .

chunk : piece of something
sprinkle : drop of liquid or small piece of something over food .
sourdough : sourdough is prepared by fermentation of dough using yeast and wild lactobacillaceae .
crust : The hard and brown outside part of bread .
